Cape Town, South Africa — A major correctional services operation and a separate gang-related shooting have once again highlighted the ongoing battle against crime and violence across the Cape Flats.
Pollsmoor Prison Raid Targets Gang Influence Behind Bars:
Authorities conducted a high-level, unannounced raid at Pollsmoor Correctional Facility over the Easter weekend, led by Department of Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale.
The operation, carried out in collaboration with the DCS Emergency Support Team and the South African Police Service (SAPS), focused on sections of the prison known to house gang-affiliated inmates.
Officials confiscated a range of contraband, including cellphones, drugs such as mandrax and dagga, sharp objects, chargers, and other illegal items.
According to authorities, these items are often smuggled into correctional facilities through visitors, court appearances, hospital visits, and in some cases, with the involvement of corrupt officials.
The facility remains a key focus due to its concentration of gang leaders and members, making it a critical point in the broader fight against organised crime in the Western Cape.
The raid forms part of ongoing efforts to restore discipline, tighten security, and disrupt criminal networks operating from inside prison walls.
Wesbank Shooting Leaves Four Wounded:
Meanwhile, violence continued on the streets of the Cape Flats.
On Saturday night, a gang-related shooting on Wydgelee Street in Wesbank left four people injured — two men and two women aged between 21 and 54.
According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, the incident unfolded when two male victims were chased by unknown suspects who opened fire. The two female victims were caught in the crossfire.
All four victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Mfuleni detectives have since launched an investigation into four counts of attempted murder.
A Region Under Pressure:
These incidents are part of a broader pattern of ongoing gang violence across Cape Town’s Cape Flats — an area long affected by poverty, unemployment, and deeply rooted gang networks.
Communities in the region are frequently exposed to shootings and gang-related activity, with innocent residents often caught in the crossfire.
Experts have warned that while enforcement operations and increased police visibility are important, they are not enough on their own to break the cycle of violence.
Ongoing Operations and Community Impact:
The Pollsmoor operation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing searches across multiple sections of the facility.
While such crackdowns aim to weaken gang influence behind bars, incidents like the Wesbank shooting highlight the persistent and complex nature of crime on the ground.
Residents across affected communities continue to live under the threat of violence, as authorities balance enforcement with long-term strategies to restore safety and stability.
