Attempted Murder Case Opened After Taxi Rank Shooting in Bloemfontein CBD
An attempted murder case has been opened following a late-night shooting at the Majakathata Long Taxi Rank in the Bloemfontein central business district. The incident occurred on Thursday, 19 February 2026, shortly after 21:15 on Short Street. According to police reports, a minibus taxi driver and his crew member were ambushed by unidentified suspects who opened fire on their vehicle from across the street. The taxi had earlier travelled from Gauteng carrying 21 passengers and had safely offloaded them at the long-distance taxi rank. The two men reportedly left the rank to purchase food when the attack took place as they were turning into Short Street. Despite sustaining injuries during the shooting, the 30-year-old driver managed to continue driving and made his way directly to Parkweg Police Station, where the incident was reported. He was later transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. His current condition has not yet been disclosed. The minibus taxi, which belongs to the Joselda Taxi Association, was found riddled with 29 bullet holes. Crime Scene Experts processed the scene and recovered 11 spent cartridges believed to be from R4 and R5 rifles. The motive for the shooting remains unclear at this stage, and no arrests have been made. The South African Police Service has appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or who may have information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. Information can be shared by contacting Captain Sabata Jafta Moseme on 082 526 2713, via the MySAPSApp, or by calling the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Police investigations are ongoing.
