R600 Million Drug Laboratory Bust in Musina

A major intelligence-led operation has uncovered and dismantled a suspected industrial-scale clandestine drug laboratory on a remote farm in Musina, Limpopo, with the estimated value of the seizure placed at around R600 million.

The operation followed a two-month covert intelligence investigation targeting suspected drug manufacturing activities in the Vhembe District. Authorities reportedly seized crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as “Tik”, along with large quantities of precursor chemicals believed to be used in the manufacturing process.

Five suspects, aged between 20 and 47, were arrested. The group includes two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and one Malawian national.

The operation involved the Hawks, SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Special Task Force, the South African Narcotics Bureau, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and Homeland Security Investigations.

Investigators say this is the third major clandestine “super-lab” dismantled in Limpopo, highlighting growing concerns over large-scale drug manufacturing operations being established on remote South African farms.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 24 August 2026, facing charges relating to illegal drug manufacturing, possession and racketeering.
